Lee, J., & Byun, K. (2021) The Past-Present: The Past Called by the Present . Space XX Space XX, Seoul, South Korea.
Curator : Boyoung Chang
Exhibition Design : Kyoungmee Byun
Participants : Jaewook Lee, Kyoungmee Byun X Lesley Harris, Che Onejoon, YoungEun Kim
Venue : SPACE XX, Dorim-ro 128ga-gil 1 (b1), Mullae-dong, Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul, South Korea
Date : June 26, 2021 - July 18, 2021 12pm-6pm (Closed on Mondays)
The Past-Present: The Past Called by the Present explores how the recent past is revisited to reconsider the ramifications of such events as war, diseases, and those involve illegitimate political power. Incorporating the memories, traces, and documentations, the artists re-present the past to provide renewed experiences and personal and public memories. The mediation includes the present status of Mullae-dong that went through gentrification and the remaining trace of the military regime that fostered the steel industry in the neighborhood, and the persistence of the Korean War in the Korean peninsula, which relate to the history of modern and contemporary Korea. The exhibition also speaks to more universal issues such as the spread of HIV/AIDS in Vietnam and the most recent Covid-19 pandemic that agitated the existence of humanity to intervene in the process of constructing public memories of the present issues that are becoming the past. The exhibition addresses, despite the seemingly loose connection, the past and the present are not only closely interconnected and but also constantly affect to reshape each other.
To fully communicate with the visitors, the works adopt various media—photography, video, and sound installation—and unconventional methodologies such as data analysis and an EEG (electroencephalogram) recording. In addition, Kyungmee Byun designed the space for the visitors to experience the show as an interaction with the entire space as well as artworks. In response to the ongoing pandemic situation, the exhibition also suggests the overall flow of the visitors’ movement to keep social and physical distance as a new model for exhibition design in the post-pandemic era.
